Gray Rec is excited to offer another round of great science programs at Russell and Memorial schools. Each class is a one hour interactive lesson and each child will receive a take home project from each class.
Fall 2018 (Oct 2018)- Marvels of Science
Have you ever wondered what clouds are made of, what goes on underneath the surface of the earth or how toys work? Join Mad Science after school to discover these countless wonders of science! Neither rain, nor snow will prevent our hands-on exploration of meteorology or from taking a voyage to the center of the Earth! We’ll investigate sound waves, suit up for a flight into space, and take a spacewalk mission that simulates a solar panel repair on the international Space Station. Inspect minerals with an ultraviolet light to see them fluoresce, investigate 3-D technology, and experience how this effect can make them feel like part of the action.
Winter (Jan 2019)- Take a Bite Out of Science
Have your parents ever told you that you have a big appetite? If so, then we invite you to “Take a Bite Out of Science” in this indulging afterschool program that will satiate your curiosity! In this sampler “course” children unravel the mystery of chemistry and watch crystals form in a water glass, experiment with hovercrafts, build and take-home Technicolor Blenders to demonstrate Newton’s color wheel invention. Grab your ticket to the stars, watch stardust burn, and investigate the sky with your own pocket sky map. Walk in the shoes of a detective and examine fingerprints, mystery powders, ink samples, and teeth impressions. Get bug eyed with an Insect-A-Vision take home that gives you an insect’s point of view. Whether you like your science savory, spicy, or sweet, this class is sure to satisfy all your curious appetite.
Spring (April 2019)- Radical Robots
Join Mad Science for a hands-on After School program all about Robots! Radical Robotics is fun for girls and boys alike. Through the integration of exciting modular robotics learning systems and various types of robots children will discover how robotic devices use sensors to learn about their environment and how people use robots to get work done. They will explore the mechanical aspects of robots, circuitry, and programming. Discover circuits using squishy conductive dough and snap together circuit-board modules to perform exciting functions. Spend a class building Moss Robotics Systems and navigating BeeBots and ProBots through obstacle courses. Finally, children will have the opportunity to build their very own robot to take home with them. Mad Science has spent years developing robotics programs for elementary students; we can confidently say that we have robotics down to a science!
